Tutorial on monday

hi everyone hope you all had a great Easter break! time to get back to work, you prob all got the email from Ben for our tutorial time for monday but just to let you know, we're first again at 2.00pm, would be great if we could all bring in our samples/ some materials to show him :)

Hi everyone, just thought i'd post some pis of a sample i've made from stips of wool, lace and cotton, I've realised i keep on using black and red on white in my work reminds me of old propaganda posters, would love to make a giant version of this. I have recently been looking at the work of Barbara Kruger, and although she may not be obviously linked as someone like boltanski her work reminded me a bit of what we want to do, she creates collages of photographs and text, creating new meaning and a narrative to found photos from mainstream magazines.

Collaborative work is like a collage, we take the best from all of us to create a new picture.

Second Hand - Second Life / Guerra de la Paz

One thing that I am interested in their work , they use second hand clothing to create their sculptures. Taking second hand clothes from different countries to make one sculpture which has individual life stories.

Their work is quite similar to our work. We use second hand clothes and wasting ropes that we take from our home...and make one piece of work.

Christian Boltanski

Christian Boltanski has used textiles in the form of clothing in his work.

The Artist explores space, and the memories attatched to clothing creating a monument- like pile of clothing, makes me think of worn clothing, death, something collected, the grid combined with the pile is interesting.

In our work we could incorporate shreads of old clothing, creating something new from something that is no longer needed or has worn out.

Rough final ideas

From our Gallery and museum visit we we're inspired to explore the concept of bringing the 'outside' into the gallery space further, we have thought about the 'tug of war' idea of using rope to travel into and out of the space and to include participation through creation of the rope structure.

We could use materials that have connotations of the 'outside' such as natural materials like leaves and branches or cloth that has sentimental value.

Also to allow the viewer to become a participant in making will be interesing to see, The final product will be made by the participants as well as ourselves and the act of making part of what we will show as our piece.

Mixed media artwork, Floral/Pattern/Fabric

Just another idea going back to the pattern/floral art idea. I was thinking because my preference is painting, you lot like flowers/patterns we could combine the too a mixed media artwork of painting and textured surfaces.

Something like this... but with fabrics etc... what you think?

Hey guys, we got to meet up and just go over our presentation :s its on Monday and were first.

Exploring space

To add on to Khuyens post, I find the idea of exploring the space very interesting. To explore the meaning attatched to the inside space v the outside has connotations of restriction, boundaries to freedoom. Yesterday we were talking about boundaries like gates and walls, Khuyen came up with the idea of the 'Tug of War' to symbolise a war between the inside and outside space. I think this will be great for our piece, it has a child-like quality as a game but the serious issue of war, It is open to participation from the inside and the outside,
we will need to start making some examples:),


Will be uploading our V&A/ Natural history museum trip pics soon once I figure out how to :S

Also it would be nice to organise another gallery trip, any sugesstions of where to go/ meet?

Final Piece.

We have a new addition to our group, Daniel. Welcome!

These are just a few ideas me and Jasmine thought about:

• Making it a performance piece,
• Hanging it somewhere on the building and bringing it into the gallery
• Having the piece outside,
• etc...

These are just a few suggestions that we think may engage the audience more, also the idea of opposites because we are displaying are work outside rather than inside?

I was thinking maybe shadows? Black vs White.

Or, using are body to create a flower?

Dressing all black (leotard) even our faces, and let us be the shadows... so when someone is walking pass, we become their shadow either on the wall or the floor.

The idea of a performance piece may benefit us because it is much more simple and does not require us to make a final piece, because i know all of us may have a lot of other work to do.

Our lecture tutor Ben suggested that whatever we choose to do, we need to make samples/try outs and keeping it simple would be best.

As Marta said it would be great if we offer a different perspective to people and it reminded me of above work. The original chess has one king &queen and others but his work has only knights. With no capture king so the conventional goal of the game has disappeared. This is just an example of negative...I think we are interested in fabric art and pattern stuff..? It would be cool if we make our work by using fabric. What you think? :D

Oh, have you guys been to his exhibition where is at Tate Modern? You should visit there, it is so cooool!

Negative meanings...

I found this picture on the internet,


'These flowers look so real from a distance that you probably can’t tell that they are hand-felted from wool. They are beautifully hand-crafted by Netherlands based artist Reya Veltman.'
It made me think more conceptually about what we want to achieve and when Khuyen shared those photos and their negatives and it made me wonder about how we could incorporate the issue of something being a 'negative' of something else. Like this flowers in the picture are facing downward, not growing in the direction we assume them to be.
If we could surprise people like this with our own final work I think that would be great, to offer a different perspective to what they see on a daily basis.
If this sounds good to everyone I think it would work in our favor to have a multi-layer of meanings/theories/concepts. But obviously not so much that we don't even remember what they are =P
